Bites!

Today’s therapy session resulted in Greta now being willing to take bites of an apple! Woo-hoo!
She spits the pieces out as soon as she takes the bite, but just the biting it is major to me. She also put a carrot stick in her mouth, rolled it around between her teeth and even sucked on it a little. She wouldn’t bite the carrot, though. She has been asking for a banana in the evening a lot lately and tonight she asked if she could mush up the rest of it with her hands after she was done eating it.
We haven’t really had any “homework” the past couple of visits. She’s just told us to keep trying to get her to take bites of things. Which is what we’ve been trying to do forever…so it doesn’t really feel like anything special is happening on the home front. That’s part of the reason I didn’t update after last week’s session. Nothing very exciting happened, so I didn’t even know what to write.
Anyway, that’s what I know for today. Hope everyone reading this is having a great day. Lots of love to all.

Keep doing the “old” homework. Repetition will make things into habits. Does she like peanut butter on her crackers? Does she like playdough? Here is a recipe that my kids loved because it uses Kool-Aid for the color which makes it smell good.
Boil rapidly: 1 cup water, 1 1/2 tablespoon oil, 1 pkg Kool-Aid
Mix: 1 1/4 cup flour, 1/4 cup salt
Add liquid mixture to dry mixture. Stir, add a little more flour if sticky. Store in a ziploc bag, removing the air when sealing.

Cool, thanks for the comments my lovelies!
Great ideas there to try out.

Hooray for Greta! I was super picky, and now you can’t tell, so there is hope.
Maybe I can bring something new or yummy or both when I see you guys? Let me know! I’d be happy to try something new to me, just to show Greta she’s not the only one that should try new things. Keep up the good work–obviously it is worth it!

PS If you do try the recommended play-doh, make sure Greta doesn’t end up trying it because it smells so good. TOO salty!!! Lots of poor, unsuspecting kids have bitten into gobs of it at messy time and been sorely disappointed by the taste.

It’s really, REALLY hard starting therapies; I remember all too well! Sometimes it seems like for every step forward, you may go two back. But tomorrow is another day. Assign yourself homework! If you feel Greta has mastered the Shaving Cream at “tubby-time,” change the environment, the palate, as it were. Trying it fully-clothed may be to much change too soon, so try just maybe in a pull-up (u know better than me). Table tops, counter tops, maybe even on a piece of paper or posterboard (which you can re-use a couple times), on a flat surface in a different room. Another fun thing you might try… if she digs applesauce (or pureed pears, bananas), maybe a dab of Kool-aid mix in it to change the color. It’s a fun thing she can “squish” and fingerpaint with that she actually can eat, should she have the inclination. (Darcy, too!)
